english language & literature

a world of options The English language and literature program at LCC aims to break the traditional belief that you can only teach or translate with a degree in language. By studying English at LCC you will develop a better understanding of literature, gain insight into language structure and functions, and develop writing excellence for both formal and informal communication. As a student in the English program, you will choose to focus your studies in one of three areas: teaching, translating and interpreting or literature.

english in the classroom The Teaching English as an International Language concentration will give you tools for teaching English to both adults and children. Our broad based education and creative approach to teaching the language will give you the vocabulary, skills and tools that may lead you to diverse careers teaching English to various audiences. As the Eastern European region seeks intensive cooperation with international partners, English is increasingly in demand for global communication. By teaching business English to adult professionals, or in secondary school, you will be well positioned to meet this demand.

english around the globe Studying Translation and Interpretation will prepare you for a challenging and exciting job as a professional translator. International trade, intercultural cooperation and integration into world organizations is impossible without people who are skilled not only in translating from one language to the other, but also in interpreting various cultures. LCC gives you all that you need for a successful career in translation: real-life experience in a multi-cultural community, opportunities to polish your skills in and outside of class, and a broad vocabulary in nearly every field. LCC Translator's Club is designed especially for this purpose: come, see and experience it live!

literature for communication Concentrating your studies in literature will help you to understand and to interpret literary works. You expand your worldview by gaining insight into other cultures through the eyes of world's famous authors. Sensitivity to language, images and understanding of how words affect people may urge you to choose a career in advertising, public relations or to pursue graduate studies.

Jane Holslag, an English department instructor, shares her perspective on English:
Students at LCC have the chance of a life-time! They have native speakers for most of their classes; just as important, the English core courses provide all students with a foundation for reading, writing and speaking. As a teacher of literature, I particularly enjoy watching students develop their critical reading, thinking, writing and speaking skills in English. Through class lectures and discussions, the varied worlds of literature are opened in new ways, and the words come alive!
